FAQs
Why hire a freelance communications specialist?
Save on time, money and energy.
Outsourcing to a specialist writer for specific projects allows you to reclaim time to focus on your organisational priorities. Working with a freelancer can be a cheaper, more flexible option to hiring another permanent member of staff, and you are guaranteed that each job will be completed on time to a high quality.
I have an MA in Communications, so writing is what I do best. It feels natural to hire an accountant to file your taxes, so why not hire a writer to fix your reports?
How do my rates compare to other writers?
I care about making a difference whilst making a living. That means charging at a lower price bracket than other writers with my skills and experience. I see this as my own personal ‘give back tax’ – the amount I am able to charge to live comfortably whilst being mindful of the humanitarian causes I am supporting.
If you have any queries, I’m happy to explain my price breakdowns and help you understand how you’re getting value for your money.
How much do my services cost?
You can take a look at the Services page to get a rough idea of my charge rates, but I make sure to be fair to my clients by understanding your needs before providing an exact quote. Writing prices vary based on the length and frequency of your requirements. I provide customised quotes for one-off pieces, blocks of content, or ongoing work. For larger pieces of work such as reports or ongoing programs, my quote will include customer profiling, industry analysis, and research into a comprehensive list of topics to engage your audience.
Do I only work with not-for-profits?
Not at all. I regularly work with academics, social entrepreneurs, tech gurus, private health providers, think tanks and sustainability start-ups. But I am driven to work for clients with a cause.
So if your business is based on improving people’s lives – be it through new technology, green energy, corporate responsibility schemes, wellbeing programs or ethical initiatives, then let’s chat.
Even if our values don’t quite line up, I’ll try my best to refer you to another talented writer for you to work with.
What am I like to work with?
Working with me means endless enthusiasm, colour-coordinated Monday boards, concept sketches, and visual timelines. I’m a visual learner, and I organise in a similar way. I’m happy to share as much or as little of the insides of my colour-coded brain as you need to feel assured that I am on top of every task.
When am I in my element?
I am a people person. Building connections and being trusted to write someone’s story is something I feel honoured and humbled by. I love getting to the heart of a story by speaking directly with stakeholders and ensuring that I capture authentic, heartfelt narratives.
I’m also a bit of a data nerd and believe that the best stories are backed up with powerful stats. So, if you give me an exciting dataset to work with, be prepared to lose me for a couple of hours whilst I trawl through for juicy information and trends.
What are my values?
Humanity, equity, integrity, humility and innovation. I am hardworking, adaptable and data-driven. I approach challenges as an opportunity for innovation. I care greatly about improving people’s lives. I aim to always listen with respect and write with humility.
What if we don’t ‘click’?
I offer all of my clients an initial free consultation to get to know each other and the project. To me, this is just as much about understanding your objectives and how to help you achieve your goals as it is about making sure we can build a positive working relationship.
What information is useful when getting started?
Aside from the project brief (which will cover tone of voice, audience, word count, requirements, deadlines, and editing agreements), it’s useful for me to understand how you work as an individual and as an organisation. Does your organisation have multiple, internal sign-off processes that we should factor into the timeline? Do you want regular updates on how I’m progressing, or would you rather not add additional emails to your inbox? Are you a pick-up-the-phone person, or would you rather communicate via email? Is it important for me to connect with the rest of the team, or will I have one point of contact? All of these things help me understand you better as my client and ensure that we work effectively together to achieve the best outcomes.
Why do I do what I do?
For me, as cheesy as it sounds, it has always been about giving back. Even when I studied architecture, I dreamed of designing sustainable living solutions for more resilient communities. Undertaking an MA in International Development was an obvious next step. And I’ve volunteered for as long as I can remember. So, first and foremost, I am a humanitarian.
However, I was six years old when I decided I wanted to be a writer. My job allows me to fulfil that childhood dream, whilst also making a difference. I get to tell the stories of some of the most incredible instances of human kindness, bravery and resilience. I hope that my stories can inspire more people to take action and build a more equitable planet.
